Subject : Re - Thomas & Frances Cholerton
Hi Edna, I have already seen 1861 census, I assume you know Thomas who is married to Frances is the brother of Mary Ann? Have you looked at my tree yet? I have got back to 1851 to a john Cholerton and Rebecca Brentnal. Mary Ann is a bit of a mystery. I have found her on the 1851 census with my g. grandfather, William age 3 and daughter Hannah, age 1 and she has put U for unmarried on all other census's she puts W for widow but there is no record of a marriage. William was born in the workhouse and there is no father on his birth certificate. Thomas puts no father on his marriage certificate either. Both William and Hannah on their marriage certificates put a father, Hannah put Thomas Cholerton, iron moulder and William put, Joseph Cholerton, labourer. On Mary Ann's death certificate where Thomas was the informant, Mary Ann it states is the widow of Thomas Cholerton, house painter. Mary Ann lived with Thomas and his family all her life and at no time is there a man present. I have come to the conclusion that they made up the father on official documents to save face. Regards Michele
